Colonizing the Moon
Building a colony on the Moon is no small feat. There a quite a few daunting factors that make such an idea seem nearly impossible. Lunar temperatures, for one, are extreme and unstable, being a sweltering 224°F during the day and then dropping to a frigid -153°F at night. Cosmic radiation is also a troubling concern. If only there was some fissure on the Moon's surface that can help guard against these harmful, unforgiving lunar elements...

The Discovery
On October 18, it was confirmed by Japan's Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) that there is in fact a notable cave-like crater beneath the Moon's surface. Measuring to be 50 kilometers (31 miles) long and 100 meters (328 feet) wide, this crevasse, according to Japanese scientists, is "located beneath a region of volcanic domes known as the Marius Hills," and "may be a subterranean lava tube created by volcanic activity some 3.5 billion years ago." Discovered by Japan's Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE) probe through the use of a radar system, this lunar fissure has already been proposed as a "possible candidate" for housing a lunar exploration base or human colony. Why? Because the structural stability of lava tubes make them the best solution for guarding against the before-mentioned crazy temperatures and cosmic radiation on the Moon's surface.

The Race to Colonize the Moon
Several countries have been vamping up their space exploration plans to include missions to the Moon. Partnerships, such as U.S.-Russia and China-Europe, are looking to build lunar bases in the future. To say the least, there is no doubt of a rising ambition to develop a greater understanding of our cosmic neighborhood and to expand human existence beyond our blue skies.
